How to
Survive a Dance
Nancy Fehrmann
Some
of you may have already gone to a dance while others are anticipating your
first big school dance. With Winter Formal just around the corner, I thought
it might be a good idea to give you some suggestions as you prepare for the
big dance so you can enjoy the event with confidence.
What to wear???
Styles don't change much in two years time. It it's a formal event; consider
that you could wear this dress for two years. You'll save time and money. Buy
or make a dress with simple lines in a color that makes you look dazzling. A
wise lady told me, "No one will remember the dress you wear; they'll
remember the smile on your face."
Keep your dress modest. You do not want to cause the minds' of the guys
around you to stumble as they look at your attire. Keep your precious body
precious. You may consider borrowing a dress, but BEWARE, if you damage the
dress, you need to be ready to pay for it.
Make sure your shoes have been broken in and are comfortable on your feet!
It's a killer when you're having fun dancing, but your feet aren't!! Being
comfortable in your clothing adds to your confidence.
Who to go with???
Go in a group. In a group, no one has to feel left out and you will all have
more fun that way. Have a couple of girlfriends come over to your house in
the afternoon so you can do hair and nails together before dressing. Have the
guys meet you there before you all go off in a group.
Maintain your boundaries.
Maintaining your boundaries is an ongoing goal. Remember to make them clear
to your guy friends. Don't compromise yourself or your future. You may be
enticed to drink alcohol or use drugs-just a little-just this once-but it
will take you down the wrong road. Drugs and alcohol cause you to loose
control.
Some girls have said that they don't want to dance the way their peers are
dancing now—it's too suggestive—so they don't. We all want to belong, but too
many find themselves following the "herd".
Be a leader. Honor the Lord and yourself with your conduct. You will be
respected and remembered for your character and your charm.
