Take a Hike
Gina Guddat
The
fall is a beautiful time to enjoy day hikes. The weather is mild and the
trees are just beginning to change color. Hiking is a fantastic form of
fitness. It works your heart and lungs aerobically, while strengthening the
major muscles in your legs and buns. Check out your library for books of
local day hikes listed by region. Or go to http://www.webwalking.com/hiking.html and
punch in your region for a great list of local day hikes. Following are a few
tips to help you enjoy God's creation.
Relax—Take a five to ten minute
break every hour, eating and drinking during each break. When resting, lay down and elevate your feet above your heart. Take off
your shoes and air out your feet. Walk at a leisurely pace that you know you
can keep up all day. Relax and stay in tune with nature as you walk. Remember
you are doing this for the journey, not the destination.
Etiquette—Practice "leave
no trace". Don't pick flowers or take home souvenirs. Leave the
trail as you have found it. Enjoy God's creation but make sure the next
person will as well.
Food and Water—Take along plenty
of water. You can lose up to 32 oz of water in 30min. if you are working
really hard and it's hot out. Pack high energy (higher fat) snacks like nuts,
seeds, dried fruit and jerky. Make sure you eat breakfast before you leave in
the morning. Carbohydrates provide the energy and stamina you need.
Clothing—Cotton is out and
synthetics are in because they wick moisture away from the skin, dry quickly
and weigh less. Wear light weight pants rather than shorts to avoid nettles
and other sticker bushes. Take along a light weight water resistant coat just
in case of a downpour. Wear good breathable sock. Double layer socks also
prevent blisters. Wear hiking boots or hiking shoes with a good tread to
avoid slipping and twisting ankles. Wear a small pack that will hold at least
2 water bottles, food, and supplies.
Safety—Bring a friend (never hike
alone), map, compass, cell phone (if you think you can get service),
flashlight, bug spray and band-aids. Always be aware of your surrounding.
Have fun!!

everything in it." (1 Corinthians 10:26)
