In our previous two newsletters, we have discussed warning signs and symptoms of eating disorders. Now that you have a better idea of how to recognize anorexia and bulimia, you might be wondering how you can help prevent these devastating diseases. Here are some ways that you can make a difference in the lives of the people around you.
* As a Parent Encourage and model healthy eating habits with your children.
* Teach your children that it’s what’s on the inside that counts, not the size of a person’s body. Build healthy self-image by focusing on children’s positive qualities.
* Don’t use food as a reward or punishment.
* Become educated in recognizing the warning signs and symptoms of an eating disorder.
* Develop your support system through friend, church and support groups.
* As an Educator or Coach Model balanced living.
* Help students clarify what is important to them.
* Don’t give advice about weight loss, exercise or appearance.
* Take warning signs seriously: There is between a 10-15% mortality rate and 25% suicide rate for those with eating disorders.
* Know your school and community resources and refer to them.
* As a Friend Know you can’t cause or cure an eating disorder, but you can contribute to prevention and recovery.
* Listen and be honest about your specific concerns.
* Encourage professional help as soon as possible.
* For Yourself Know that you are more than a number and body size. You are a valuable and precious person.
* Be aware of unrealistic body image messages that are portrayed in the media.
* Avoid extremes and work toward balanced living.
* Develop healthy and supportive relationship.
