Conflict happens. Because we will have times when we need to talk with our friends and family members about conflict, it is important to look for opportunities to communicate about other stuff. Look for ways to engage in positive communications with those around you. Think of something nice to say, everyday. Make your goodbyes and goodnights friendly, even when you don't feel like it.

When talking face-to-face is tough, it is possible to leave the doors open with written communication. Leave little post-it notes (not chore lists!) on your daughter's bedroom door wishing her a good day. Stick a post-it on the steering wheel saying, "Thanks for driving me to the concert last night, Mom." Stock up on cards or stationary to write down thoughts or encouraging messages on non-birthdays. Send email! It is well worth the time building up these positive interactions to balance the times when tough issues need to be confronted
