During the summer months, we often spend more time together as families. Whether we are just kicking around the house or packed up in the car for a road trip, this means more time rubbing elbows with parents and siblings. While this can be a wonderful experience building memories that last a lifetime, it also means more chances for family conflicts. Those family times will be remembered much more fondly if we follow a few good tips:

1. Commit to solving conflicts verbally instead of physically (this means no cheap shots behind the seat while mom is driving.)

2. No swearing allowed. While you’re at it, consider ditching the words "stupid," "shut up," and "hate."

3. Always avoid the word "always" and Never use the word "never". "You always let Jason sit up front and never let me!"

4. Use I-messages. "I am feeling tired of singing in the car" versus "Shut up, you are so annoying!"

5. Don’t bring up old history. Stick to the problem at hand.

6. Say "I’m sorry."

7. Grant forgiveness.

8. Avoid harassment, stereotyping, lying, bullying, teasing, and name-calling.

9. Seek out a "win-win" situation. Work on coming up with a mutually agreeable solution.

10. Give peace a chance.

"Live in harmony with one another…If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." (Romans 12:16 and 18
